The Commissionerate Police has suspended Khandagiri Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Devi Prasad Behera due to negligence and lapses in a high-profile drug encounter case.
The incident, which occurred on April 11, involved an accused named Sheikh Jamsed, who was injured during a police encounter conducted by a joint team of the Special Crime Unit and Khandagiri Police. The operation led to the seizure of brown sugar from the accused at the scene.
As per protocol, a chargesheet was to be filed against the accused within 60 days of the encounter. However, SI Behera failed to submit the chargesheet within the stipulated timeframe, which reportedly allowed the accused to secure bail easily.
The Commissionerate Police issued a statement citing “negligence in duty and poor investigation” as the reasons for the suspension. An official notification has been released confirming the disciplinary action against the officer.
