The makers of the Malayalam film Janaki vs State of Kerala, starring Union Minister Suresh Gopi, have agreed to change the film’s title following objections from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The CBFC had raised concerns over the use of “Janaki,” a name associated with the Hindu goddess Sita, deeming it potentially sensitive.
During a hearing at the Kerala High Court on Wednesday, the filmmakers informed the bench that they are willing to adopt one of the CBFC’s suggested alternatives—either V Janaki or Janaki V. The board also requested the muting of the name “Janaki” in one specific courtroom scene for the film to be cleared.
The title change comes after the CBFC refused to grant certification unless alterations were made, citing possible religious sentiments. The producers argued that the name referred to the film’s fictional lead character—a rape survivor seeking justice from the state—and was not intended to invoke religious symbolism.
Despite difficulties in rebranding the film just ahead of its scheduled release, the production company, Cosmos Entertainments, agreed to the changes to avoid further delays. The film’s release had been stalled due to pending certification, prompting the producers to move the High Court.
Directed by Pravin Narayanan and also featuring Anupama Parameswaran, the film centers on a woman’s legal battle following sexual assault. With the proposed changes, the CBFC said clearance could be granted within three days of resubmission.
