In a significant move to boost millet cultivation and curb the illicit liquor trade, the Odisha government has announced plans to promote the production of liquor from millets.

This decision was made during a review meeting of the Excise Department, presided over by Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan.

The government will provide subsidies to brewers producing millet-based liquor and will collaborate with the Industries Department to facilitate the process. Additionally, the state aims to develop high-quality, flavored liquor from mahua, a local flower, and foreign liquor.

The Excise Policy 2025-26 will introduce measures to combat the illicit liquor trade in the state. The Odisha government also plans to export high-quality liquor to other states and foreign countries in the future, according to Excise Commissioner Narasingha Bhol.

The policy emphasizes the collection of Mahua flowers, considering the interests of the tribal community. The meeting, attended by key officials including Excise Secretary Guha Punam Tapas Kumar and Excise Commissioner Narasingha Bhol, discussed the necessary funds and feedback gathering from stakeholders for the draft proposal of the excise policy 2025-26.

Minister Harichandan highlighted the importance of inclusive lawmaking, stating that incorporating everyone’s opinions benefits both the government and the people.
