India and Trinidad and Tobago have signed six Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance cooperation across key sectors such as infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, culture, and sports during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s landmark visit to the Caribbean nation. This marks the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Trinidad and Tobago since 1999.

During his meeting with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Modi discussed expanding collaboration in areas including defence, agriculture, healthcare, digital transformation, and capacity building. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to combat terrorism in all forms and expressed solidarity following the recent Pahalgam terror attack in India.

Prime Minister Modi also met President Christine Carla Kangaloo and congratulated her on receiving the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award for her public service. The MEA described the meeting as warm and reaffirming of the historical friendship between the two nations, underpinned by democratic values, pluralism, and strong people-to-people ties.

The six MoUs cover pharmacopoeia standards, quick-impact projects, cultural cooperation, sports exchanges, and diplomatic training. Additional announcements included India’s offer to extend Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards to sixth-generation Indian-origin citizens in Trinidad and Tobago.

Both leaders also agreed to bolster cooperation among Global South countries and reinforce the India-CARICOM partnership. In his address to the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament, Modi highlighted the cricketing connection and lauded the contributions of the Indian diaspora across various spheres of the nation’s development—from politics to poetry, commerce to culture.

The MEA stated that the visit has added new momentum to bilateral relations. Modi has invited Prime Minister Bissessar to visit India, which she has accepted.
