In an extraordinary display of resilience and efficiency, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has successfully restored train services between Jarati and Maligura stations on the Koraput–Kirandul line under the Waltair Division, just two days after a massive landslide disrupted operations on July 2, 2025.

The landslide, triggered by incessant rainfall, buried a significant portion of the track under approximately 25,000 cubic meters of mud and boulders, halting train services in this critical section of Odisha’s hilly terrain. By the evening of July 4, 2025, the track was certified fit for operations.

The Koraput–Kirandul line, a vital artery for passenger and freight movement, faced severe disruption when heavy rainfall caused the landslide. The challenging hilly landscape and continuous downpours posed significant obstacles, yet the ECoR’s restoration teams responded with unparalleled speed and coordination.

Over 300 personnel, including engineers, technical staff, and ground workers, were deployed to the site, supported by 16 excavators and heavy earth-moving machinery. The operation was meticulously planned and executed under the direct supervision of senior railway officials, including the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Waltair Division, DRM Rayagada, and Additional DRMs.The restoration effort was a race against time. Working round-the-clock, the teams cleared the massive debris and restored the track’s structural integrity. By the evening of July 4, 2025, the affected section was deemed safe for train operations, albeit with restricted speed as a precautionary measure. Ongoing work related to Overhead Equipment (OHE), signaling, and other safety systems is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed soon, ensuring full operational capacity.

Parmeshwar Funkwal, General Manager of East Coast Railway, personally commended the workforce and leadership for their dedication. “This swift restoration is a shining example of dedication, coordination, and efficiency, even in the face of adverse weather and tough geographical conditions,” said  Funkwal. He extended his congratulations to the entire team for their unwavering commitment, which has restored normalcy for passengers and freight movement while reinforcing Indian Railways’ reputation for operational excellence.

Due to the temporary unavailability of coaching rakes and necessary rake adjustments, some trains are scheduled to originate and terminate at Koraput on July 4, 2025. Passengers are advised to stay informed through official railway channels for the latest updates on train schedules and operations.

The successful resumption of services on the Koraput–Kirandul line not only ensures connectivity but also strengthens public trust in the railway’s operational resilience.
