Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede during the Rath Yatra in Puri, which claimed the lives of at least three devotees and injured many more.
In a statement posted on social media, Gandhi wrote:
“The stampede incident during the Rath Yatra in Puri is extremely tragic… I appeal to the Odisha government to expedite relief efforts and urge Congress workers to provide every possible assistance in this regard.”
He further emphasized that the unfortunate event serves as a serious warning about the importance of comprehensive security arrangements and effective crowd management, especially during large-scale religious festivals attended by lakhs of devotees.
“Protecting lives is paramount,” Gandhi added, asserting that no lapses in this responsibility are acceptable.
His remarks come in the wake of widespread criticism of the local administration over inadequate barricading and confusion, which reportedly led to the stampede near the Gundicha Temple. Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan has also assured that stern action will be taken against those responsible. The Collector and SP of Puri have already been transferred following the tragedy.
