The city of Cuttack is witnessing a surge in complaints against private hospitals, with allegations of medical negligence leading to patient deaths.
Over the past 15 days, three private hospitals have come under fire, prompting swift action from the district administration.
A three-member team has been constituted to investigate the hospitals’ documentation, and authorities have warned that facilities lacking necessary certifications will be sealed.
District Collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde stated, “We are taking these complaints seriously. Any hospital failing to produce valid documents during the investigation will face strict action, including closure.” Additionally, five doctors have been named in police cases filed across various stations in the city due to alleged medical errors and negligence.
Among the reported incidents, Janani Hospital in Ranihat faces accusations of severing a woman’s rectum during treatment, leading to a case filed at Mangalabag police station by the affected patient, Diptimayee Barik. Similarly, Budhababa Multi Specialty Hospital in Jobra Rehman Chhak has been charged with negligence following the death of Ajit Kumar Rout from Dhenkanal. Rout’s family alleges that a cancer centre employee misled them into opting for surgery at the private facility, where Rout died a day after being admitted to the ICU.
In another case, a pediatric patient from Dhenkanal’s Rasol died after a hernia operation at Heritage Healthcare in Chandini Chowk. The child’s mother, Sujata Nayak, claims the surgery was mishandled, and her health insurance card was misused to siphon funds. A case has been lodged at Lalbag police station against a doctor from Sishu Bhawan, who allegedly referred the patient to a private hospital.
The rising number of private hospitals in Cuttack has raised concerns about the quality of healthcare services. Frequent complaints of inadequate treatment and negligence have sparked public outrage, pushing the administration to enforce stricter regulations.
The ongoing investigations aim to ensure accountability and restore trust in the city’s healthcare system.
