The latest edition of the Dhenkanal Heritage Walks (DHW) brought together 30 heritage enthusiasts from across Odisha to explore the rich history and architecture of Kumbheswar Temple in Deopada village.

As part of the visit, participants first cleaned the temple premises before engaging in an insightful discussion on its origins and significance. Built in 1818 AD under King Gopinatha Bebarta Pattanaik of Athagarh, the temple holds deep historical roots, with myths linking its name to “Kumbha” and the Shiva temple legend of the cow and milk.

Historians present at the event highlighted architectural aspects, including the Rekha Deula-style structure and Pidha-style entrance, while noting the presence of Harihara culture, an unusual blend of Vishnu and Shiva iconography. Rituals such as Shitalshasthi and Shivaratri were discussed by temple priests, shedding light on traditions once practised here, including the Danda Nacha dance.

The heritage walk concluded with a visit to Gobindapur village, where participants witnessed local Raja festival celebrations, including the traditional Raja Doli and sampled the region’s famed “bara” delicacy. Heritage experts highlighted ongoing efforts to promote similar walks across Cuttack, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, and Baripada, fostering greater awareness of Odisha’s cultural richness.
