In a proactive move to safeguard the upcoming Rath Yatra, a world-renowned festival scheduled for June 27, 2025, a multi-agency anti-terrorist mock drill was successfully conducted today at Puri Railway Station and Bagedia Dharmashala, in front of the Jagannath Temple.

With lakhs of devotees expected to converge in Puri from across India and abroad, the drill aimed to fortify security measures and test the preparedness of law enforcement agencies against potential terrorist threats.

The exercise simulated a high-stakes terrorist attack at the bustling Puri Railway Station. Three disguised “terrorists,” enacted by Odisha Police personnel, stormed the station, targeting passengers on Platforms 1 and 2 and attempting to hijack the Tapaswini Express on Platform 3. Initial attempts by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) to neutralise the threat were met with resistance, highlighting the complexity of such scenarios. However, Odisha Police’s elite Special Tactical Unit (STU) commandos swiftly intervened, eliminating the mock terrorists and securing the area.

The drill didn’t stop there. The Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) promptly evacuated injured “passengers,” while the fire department contained a simulated blaze at the station. The coordinated response involved eleven departments, including Odisha Police, ODRAF, STU, Special Operations Group (SOG), RPF, GRP, fire services, and health services, showcasing seamless inter-agency collaboration.

Puri Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinit Agrawal, who oversaw the operation, emphasised the drill’s significance. “This is a critical part of our security preparations for Rath Yatra 2025. The exercise tested our ability to counter a terrorist attack, ensuring the safety of devotees. All agencies worked in unison, and we are confident in our readiness,” Agrawal stated.

The Rath Yatra, a nine-day festival celebrating Lord Jagannath’s journey, draws massive crowds, making robust security imperative. Authorities are leaving no stone unturned to prevent any untoward incidents, with special focus on high-traffic areas like the railway station and temple premises.

Today’s drill underscores Odisha’s commitment to hosting a safe and serene festival, reinforcing public confidence as the global event approaches.
