A tragic boating accident occurred at the Balimela reservoir in Malkangiri district, leaving one person missing after a sudden storm capsized a boat.
The incident took place near Orapadar river ghat when three individuals, including Sanka Palashi, his mother, and his wife, were returning home from work using a boat. A sudden rise in wind intensity during late afternoon caused the vessel to lose balance and overturn in the middle of the river.
Local residents immediately sprang into action, successfully rescuing Sanka’s mother and wife. However, despite extensive search efforts by villagers, Sanka remains missing. Authorities, including firefighting personnel, have reached the scene and are continuing rescue operations.
This unfortunate incident highlights ongoing concerns about the lack of proper infrastructure in the area. Despite repeated accidents, no government measures have been taken to construct a bridge at the site, leaving residents reliant on unsafe river crossings.
