Odisha COVID-19 Response

As of June 6, 2025, Odisha is grappling with a fresh wave of COVID-19 infections, prompting swift action from the state government to curb the spread. With 755 samples tested, 38 individuals have tested positive, marking a positivity rate of approximately 5%.

Of these, 9 have fully recovered, while the remaining 29 are stable and under home isolation. This resurgence underscores the need for vigilant public health measures, as Odisha aligns with national strategies to safeguard its population.

On June 3, 2025, a high-level virtual meeting, chaired by the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW), reviewed the national COVID-19 scenario. The meeting included key stakeholders such as State Health Authorities, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) institutions, State Surveillance Units, and National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) officials. Following the discussions, the Government of India issued a press note outlining enhanced preparedness measures, which Odisha has committed to implementing rigorously.

Odisha’s response includes intensified testing, contact tracing, and strict adherence to isolation protocols. The state’s health infrastructure is being mobilised to ensure adequate medical supplies, hospital beds, and oxygen availability, learning from past waves. Public awareness campaigns are also underway to promote mask-wearing, social distancing, and vaccination, particularly targeting vulnerable populations. The state’s proactive stance reflects its determination to prevent a larger outbreak while ensuring the well-being of those affected.

Nationally, the resurgence of COVID-19 has prompted similar actions across states. The virtual meeting highlighted the importance of real-time surveillance, rapid testing, and genomic sequencing to monitor potential variants. Odisha’s State Surveillance Unit is collaborating with ICMR and NCDC to track the virus’s spread and ensure timely interventions. The state’s recovery rate of 23.7% among confirmed cases is encouraging, but health officials remain cautious, emphasising the need for sustained vigilance.

The Government of Odisha has reassured citizens that all necessary measures are in place to manage the current situation.

As the nation navigates this new phase of the pandemic, Odisha’s efforts serve as a model of proactive governance.

By aligning with national directives and leveraging its health infrastructure, the state is working tirelessly to protect public health and prevent further escalation of cases.
