Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling has initiated an investigation into the sudden deaths of six patients at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital (SLNMCH) in Koraput.

The patients died within hours of each other, raising serious concerns about potential medical negligence.

Mahaling visited the hospital early on Thursday to assess the situation, meeting with hospital authorities and questioning staff. Family members of the deceased claim that the patients’ health deteriorated after receiving late-night injections, which led to a significant protest inside the hospital.

In his statement, the minister acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and assured that a thorough investigation is underway. He emphasised that necessary actions will be taken once the final report is completed.

Officials conducted inspections of various hospital wards, including the ICU, to identify any irregularities in healthcare practices. The minister further assured that any mismanagement discovered will be addressed.

The government has deployed multiple investigation teams, including senior doctors from MKCG Medical College and SCB Medical College, to carry out an independent review of the deaths. Meanwhile, SLNMCH officials have denied any wrongdoing regarding medication administration but have recognised the gravity of the situation.

As the inquiry progresses, post-mortem examinations are being conducted to determine the exact causes of death. The hospital has also begun a review of medical protocols to ensure patient safety.
