The Khurda Road-Balangir Rail Line Project, a flagship initiative by Indian Railways, achieved a historic milestone on May 30, 2025, with the breakthrough of Tunnel No. T2 between Buguda and Daspalla in Nayagarh District.

This breakthrough marks the completion of excavation work for all seven tunnels in the critical 75-kilometre stretch from Daspalla to Purunakatak, bringing the 301-km rail corridor closer to full connectivity across Odisha.

Tunnel T2, spanning 1,775 meters with a 2-degree curve, stands as a testament to modern engineering prowess. Constructed using the advanced New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), this tunnel navigated the rugged terrain of the Eastern Ghats, setting a new benchmark for infrastructure projects in India. As the second-longest tunnel in Nayagarh District, T2’s completion underscores the project’s ability to tackle complex geological and environmental challenges.

The Khurda Road-Balangir Rail Line, a 301-km corridor, aims to bridge eastern and western Odisha, enhancing passenger and freight movement. With 106 km already operational from Khurda Road to Daspalla and 120 km from Balangir to Purunakatak, the focus now shifts to the remaining 75-km stretch to Adhenigarh, where all seven tunnels are now fully excavated.

The seven tunnels, totalling 12.76 km in length, presented formidable obstacles. In Nayagarh District, Tunnel T1 measures 800 meters, T2 spans 1,775 meters, and T3, the longest in the district, stretches 2,620 meters with a 2-degree curve. In Boudh District, Tunnel T4 stands out at 4,183 meters with an additional 700-meter escape tunnel, followed by T5 (317 meters), T6 (290.75 meters), and T7 (1,975 meters).

Construction teams faced highly variable soil and rock conditions, requiring precise design for curved alignments and simultaneous dual-end tunneling to meet deadlines. Environmental challenges were equally daunting, with sections near wildlife zones demanding ecologically sensitive practices, noise control, and vibration mitigation. Despite these hurdles, Indian Railways and its contractors delivered steady progress, with each tunnel breakthrough marking a step toward regional transformation.

The Khurda Road-Balangir Rail Line promises to revolutionise transportation in Odisha. Once fully operational, it will slash travel time between Bhubaneswar and Balangir, improve access to education, healthcare, and markets, and stimulate trade and regional development. Freight movement across Odisha and beyond will also see a significant boost, supporting industries and economic growth.

This project aligns with Indian Railways’ mission to enhance intra-state connectivity, bridging infrastructure gaps and fostering inclusive progress. As the final 75-km stretch nears completion, anticipation builds for a connected Odisha, poised to reap the benefits of this ambitious rail corridor.

With all seven tunnels now complete, the focus shifts to track laying, electrification, and other finishing works in the Purunakatak to Adhenigarh segment.

The Khurda Road-Balangir Rail Line is not just a railway—it’s a lifeline for progress, connecting communities and fueling growth across the state.
