Water Tariff Hike Odisha 2025

The Odisha government has announced a 10% hike in water tariffs for industrial and commercial sectors for the 2025-26 financial year.

The decision, made by the Water Resources Department, will be applied retrospectively from April 1, 2025, and remain in effect until March 31, 2026.

Additional Secretary of the Water Resources Department, Arati Rout, communicated the decision in a letter to the Chief Engineer (Projects and Development), citing compliance with the Odisha Irrigation Rules-1961 and its 2016 amendment. The letter instructs subordinate officials to be informed of the updated rates.

The tariff increase applies to various industries and businesses that receive water allocations from the state government or utilise groundwater. Under the amended rules, industrial units must obtain a license from the government to determine their water usage.

For instance, in the brick and tile industry, the rate for 1,000 litres of water, previously set at Rs 30 in 2010, had risen to Rs 54. With the new 10% hike, this now stands at Rs 57. Similarly, rates for other industries and commercial entities have been increased by 10% over the base amount.

The move aims to support sustainable water management and cover maintenance costs, though it may add financial pressure on industries and businesses across Odisha. The Water Resources Department has directed the Chief Engineer to ensure all relevant stakeholders are notified of the change.
