In a heartbreaking incident, Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari of the Sikkim Scouts displayed extraordinary valour but tragically lost his life while rescuing an Agniveer soldier during a patrol in North Sikkim.
The 23-year-old officer, commissioned just six months ago, jumped into a raging mountain stream to save his comrade but was swept away by the powerful current. His selflessness and dedication will remain an inspiration to generations of Indian soldiers.
Lieutenant Tiwari was leading a patrol towards a strategic operating base when Agniveer Stephan Subba lost balance while crossing a log bridge. Without hesitation, the young officer leapt into the treacherous waters to pull him to safety. Though Naik Pukar Katel successfully rescued the Agniveer, Lieutenant Tiwari was overpowered by the current and carried downstream. His mortal remains were later recovered, and the Indian Army honoured his sacrifice with full military honours.
The Indian Army expressed deep condolences and assured unwavering support to the bereaved family. “His bravery and devotion to duty will continue to inspire generations. The Indian Army stands shoulder to shoulder with the family in this hour of grief,” stated a post by the Trishakti Corps.
Survived by his parents and sister, Lieutenant Tiwari’s sacrifice highlights the unyielding spirit and camaraderie within the armed forces. His courage is a testament to the motto of selfless service that defines the Indian Army.
