The Odisha State Maritime Museum in Jobra, Cuttack, is set to undergo a significant transformation with the renovation of its Indonesian Gallery.

The Odisha government has secured approval from the Indonesian Embassy in New Delhi to proceed with the restoration and maintenance work, which will be funded entirely by the embassy. This initiative aims to preserve the rich cultural and historical connections between Odisha and Indonesia, showcased through the gallery’s exhibits.

The Water Resources Department of Odisha has formally communicated with the Indonesian Embassy, emphasising the need for repairs and upkeep of the gallery. According to a letter from Additional Secretary Subrata Kumar Nayak, several critical areas of the gallery require urgent restoration, including polishing and maintenance of the displayed artefacts. As the museum is housed in a heritage building, any maintenance work necessitates prior approval to ensure the structure’s integrity is preserved.

The Indonesian Gallery is a vital component of the museum, housing artefacts and displays that highlight the centuries-old maritime and cultural exchanges between Odisha and Indonesia. These ties date back to ancient trade routes and cultural interactions, particularly through Odisha’s historical ports like Puri and Konark. The gallery serves as a testament to the shared heritage, featuring items that reflect the influence of Indonesian art, trade, and maritime traditions on Odisha’s coastal communities.

The renovation project is expected to enhance the gallery’s appeal, making it more engaging for visitors and researchers interested in the maritime history of the region. The Odisha government views this as an opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties with Indonesia, fostering cultural diplomacy through the preservation of shared heritage. The museum, a popular destination for history enthusiasts, is anticipated to attract more visitors once the gallery is revitalised.

Officials from the Water Resources Department have expressed optimism about the project, noting that the Indonesian Embassy’s financial support underscores the importance of this cultural collaboration. The renovation will adhere to strict guidelines to maintain the authenticity of the heritage building while upgrading the display infrastructure to modern standards. This includes improving lighting, signage, and artefact preservation techniques to ensure longevity.

The Odisha State Maritime Museum, established to celebrate the state’s seafaring legacy, houses several galleries that narrate the story of Odisha’s maritime prowess. The Indonesian Gallery, in particular, has been a highlight due to its unique focus on cross-cultural connections. The upcoming renovation is expected to elevate its status as a must-visit cultural landmark in Cuttack.

As the project moves forward, the Odisha government and the Indonesian Embassy will collaborate closely to ensure timely completion. This initiative not only preserves a slice of history but also reinforces the enduring bond between Odisha and Indonesia, inviting future generations to explore their shared past.
