The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has mandated the installation of ‘Sugar Boards’ across all affiliated schools in India.

The initiative aims to curb excessive sugar consumption among students by raising awareness about its health risks and encouraging mindful eating.

With childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes on the rise, CBSE’s directive follows recommendations from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). According to reports, children aged 4–10 consume up to 13% of their daily calories from sugar, while teenagers exceed 15%—far above the World Health Organisation’s recommended limit of 5%.

The newly introduced ‘Sugar Boards’ will provide essential information on daily sugar intake recommendations, sugar content in popular food items, and healthier alternatives. Schools will also be required to conduct workshops and awareness programs to educate students on the long-term benefits of reduced sugar consumption.
