The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of India’s sixth semiconductor manufacturing unit under the India Semiconductor Mission.

This facility, a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn, will be located near Jewar Airport in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA).

Designed to manufacture display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, and other screen-based devices, the plant is expected to produce 36 million units per month with an initial investment of ₹3,700 crore.

The approval of this unit marks a significant step toward India’s goal of self-reliance in semiconductor production, aligning with the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Moreover, the growing semiconductor ecosystem has attracted global partners, including Applied Materials, Lam Research, Merck, and Linde, which are expanding their presence in India.

With the rapid growth of industries requiring semiconductors, such as consumer electronics, medical devices, defence, and power electronics, this move reinforces India’s commitment to becoming a global player in semiconductor manufacturing.
