Trump Claims U.S. Mediation in India-Pakistan Ceasefire at Saudi Forum

In a surprising assertion during his speech at the Saudi-U.S. Investment Forum on May 13, 2025, former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that his administration had successfully brokered a historic ceasefire between India and Pakistan, averting a potential nuclear conflict.

This statement, delivered amidst discussions on economic ties and regional stability, has ignited a flurry of reactions and raised questions about the accuracy of his account.

Trump, addressing a high-profile audience, stated, “Just days ago, my administration successfully brokered a historic ceasefire to stop the escalating violence between India and Pakistan. I used trade to a large extent. I said Let’s make a deal, let’s do some trading. Let’s not trade nuclear missiles, let’s trade the things you make so beautifully.” He further elaborated on the diplomatic efforts, suggesting that both nations, led by “very powerful, strong, and smart leaders,” had agreed to de-escalate, potentially leading to improved relations and even social interactions like dining together.

This claim comes in the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, exacerbated by India’s military operation “Sindoor,” which targeted terror sites in Pakistan.

However, official statements from both Indian and Pakistani authorities present a contrasting narrative. The U.S. Department of State announced the ceasefire on May 10, 2025, crediting intensive diplomatic engagements over the past 48 hours involving senior officials from both countries, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik. Notably, these announcements did not mention U.S. mediation, focusing instead on direct negotiations facilitated by neutral sites.

The discrepancy between Trump’s account and the official narratives has led to scepticism among analysts.

Trump’s speech also touched on broader regional issues, including his administration’s stance on Iran and the potential for Saudi Arabia to join the Abraham Accords. However, it was his ceasefire claim that dominated discussions, with social media platforms buzzing with debates over the veracity of his statements.

The Indian government, through its Ministry of External Affairs, has yet to respond directly to Trump’s claims, maintaining a focus on the ceasefire’s implementation and the ongoing dialogue with Pakistan. Similarly, Pakistani officials have emphasised the role of their own diplomatic channels in reaching the agreement.

As the international community watches the fragile peace between India and Pakistan, Trump’s assertion adds a layer of complexity to the narrative of how the ceasefire was achieved. Whether his claim holds water or is another instance of diplomatic exaggeration remains to be seen, but it undoubtedly underscores the intricate dance of international relations in a region fraught with historical tensions.
