On May 7, 2025, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor, a precision military operation targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

The operation, a response to the brutal killing of 26 civilians in a terrorist attack near Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir on April 22, 2025, marked a significant escalation in India’s ongoing fight against cross-border terrorism.

During a press conference on May 11, 2025, DGMO Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, alongside Air Marshal AK Bharti and Vice Admiral AN Pramod, detailed the operation’s success, confirming the elimination of over 100 terrorists and the destruction of 11 Pakistani air bases.

The operation zeroed in on nine terror camps, including the Jaish-e-Mohammed headquarters in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba’s nerve centre in Muridke, both notorious for orchestrating attacks on Indian soil. High-value targets eliminated included Yusuf Azhar, linked to the 1999 IC-814 hijacking, Abdul Malik Rauf, and Mudassir Ahmad, all key figures in Pakistan-based terror networks. “Our actions were focused, measured, and non-escalatory, aimed solely at dismantling terrorist infrastructure,” Lt Gen Ghai stated, emphasising India’s commitment to ethical operations with minimal civilian harm.

Tensions flared further after a US-mediated ceasefire on May 10, 2025, when Pakistan violated the agreement by sending unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and small drones into Indian civilian and military areas. Indian forces successfully intercepted these intrusions, with field commanders now authorised to respond decisively to any future violations. The operation has drawn both praise and concern—Indian citizens lauded the military’s swift action, while Pakistan accused India of aggression, reporting heavy damage to its infrastructure.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri defended India’s actions, stating, “India exercised its right to act on terror proportionately and responsibly.” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh echoed this sentiment, noting that the strikes were executed with precision as planned. Meanwhile, social media buzzed with reactions, from patriotic fervour to concerns over escalating tensions, with reports of drone activity in border areas like Barmer adding to the unease.

Operation Sindoor underscores India’s zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism, sending a clear message to Pakistan while highlighting the fragile security dynamics in the region. As both nations navigate this volatile phase, the international community watches closely, hoping for de-escalation amidst the spectre of nuclear-armed rivalry.
