Building a ‘Steel-Strong’ India: PM Modi’s Vision for 2047

Under the National Steel Policy, India aims to produce 300 million tonnes of steel annually by 2030. The country’s per capita steel consumption is set to rise from 98 kilograms to 160 kilograms within the same timeline. Government initiatives, such as the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan and the mandate to use only ‘Made in India’ steel for government projects, are driving these transformative goals.

Technological advancements were also in focus, with an emphasis on energy-efficient and low-emission processes, AI, automation, and recycling. With the introduction of high-grade steel for strategic sectors and the ambition to export 25 million tonnes annually, the country is poised to become a global steel hub by 2047.

Challenges such as dependence on raw material imports and the need for rapid greenfield mining are being addressed through partnerships, mining reforms, and exploration of alternative technologies.
