As Odisha continues to face soaring temperatures during a relentless heatwave, the state’s Health Department has assured the public that no deaths have been officially attributed to sunstroke.

Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, Director of Public Health, confirmed that out of 66 individuals treated for heatstroke across hospitals in Odisha till Tuesday, post-mortem reports have not linked any deaths to the condition.

A recent death in Titilagarh initially raised concerns about heat-related mortality. However, investigations revealed the cause to be a heart attack. The Health Department remains vigilant, urging citizens to adopt stringent precautions to combat the heatwave’s risks.

To mitigate health concerns, authorities have issued advisories recommending limited outdoor activities between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., hydration, and light, protective clothing. In addition to closing schools temporarily, campaigns are being conducted to educate the public on recognising and preventing heatstroke symptoms. Special attention is directed toward vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Healthcare facilities have enhanced preparedness by setting up dedicated beds for heatstroke patients, ensuring prompt medical care is available across district and community health centres.

The Odisha Health Department continues to emphasise the importance of awareness and precaution as the state grapples with extreme weather conditions.
