To enhance road safety and fair enforcement, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has announced mandatory verification of radar-based speed measurement devices under the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011.

Effective July 1, 2025, this regulation ensures that all such devices are accurate, calibrated, and legally compliant before deployment by law enforcement agencies.

The move is expected to boost public trust, prevent unjust penalties, and establish a technically sound enforcement system in India. Verified radar systems will allow precise speed monitoring, aiding accident prevention and reducing road infrastructure wear and tear. The rules align with international standards (OIML R 91), further strengthening India’s legal metrology framework.

Stakeholders—including State Metrology Departments, manufacturers, and consumer organizations—were consulted before finalizing the guidelines. Officials highlight that scientifically validated radar devices will improve compliance while safeguarding the rights of citizens.

This development is expected to streamline speed enforcement, bolster law enforcement credibility, and drive data-based governance in traffic management, ultimately leading to safer roads across the nation.
