As voting concludes across the United States in the 2026 midterm elections, an Associated Press election day exit poll reveals widespread voter dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump’s military action in Iran, with roughly six in ten Americans declaring the conflict a “wrong decision.”
The polling data highlights significant voter pushback against the escalating military campaign, whose cost has risen past $47.1 billion according to recent Pentagon estimates. While President Trump expressed optimism that elevated energy and gasoline prices resulting from the conflict will soon decline, public frustration over broader economic pressure remains high across both red and blue states.
Cost of Living and Democracy Outrank Foreign Policy
Despite public disapproval of the military action in Iran, foreign policy was not the primary driver for most voters at the ballot box:
- Dominant Election Issues: Approximately 40% of national voters named the economy—specifically grocery costs and spiking gas prices—as their single most important issue. Another 30% cited the state of democracy and government corruption.
- Crucial Voting Factors: About half of all surveyed voters categorized the cost of living and government corruption as “crucial” factors deciding their vote for Congress. In comparison, only one-third cited the war in Iran as a crucial factor.
- Marginal Drivers: Only 10% of respondents identified immigration or healthcare as their top issue, while foreign policy and crime received minimal mentions as primary motivators.
Widespread Public Dissatisfaction
The exit poll underscored deep voter frustration with the country’s overall direction:
- State Disparities: While dissatisfaction surged highest in traditional blue states such as California and Massachusetts, a clear majority of voters in deep-red states also expressed dissatisfaction with current conditions.
- Economic Assessment: Roughly 75% of voters described the national economy as “not so good” or “poor,” reflecting persistent anxiety over daily household expenditures.
