In a symbolic protest against alleged electoral irregularities and “vote theft,” 21 opposition parties belonging to the INDIA bloc and Left groups gathered at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s 10, Rajaji Marg residence on Saturday to conduct a mock public impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar presided over the mock parliamentary proceedings, which were initiated by Mallikarjun Kharge moving the symbolic motion.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi emphasised that the platform aimed to highlight concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the broader attack on democratic institutions. Leaders from participating parties delivered addresses, culminating in concluding remarks by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi before the motion was formally adopted.
The event, rescheduled from Friday due to unseasonal rains, was moved to Kharge’s residence after Congress leader Jairam Ramesh alleged that police denied permission for public venues.
The protest follows recent reports highlighting internal friction within the Election Commission over decision-making processes.
Responding to the Opposition’s escalating demonstrations—which will include a massive rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1—Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the ruling BJP is ready to convene a special session of Parliament to debate the allegations.
