Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on the INDIA bloc on Friday, October 30, 2026, stating that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is fully prepared to convene a special session of Parliament to debate opposition allegations of “vote theft” (vote chori) and voter roll manipulation.
Addressing party workers at the Uttar Pradesh BJP Working Committee meeting in Lucknow, Shah challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav to debate the issue on the floor of the House rather than staging political demonstrations on the streets.
Parliamentary Challenge vs Street Demonstrations
Refuting allegations leveled against the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the Home Minister asserted that opposition parties routinely question electoral integrity following election defeats:
”I am ready to call a special session of Parliament to discuss vote theft allegations. But Rahul baba will never agree. He will never discuss the issue in Parliament but will create a nuisance on the street. I challenge Rahul and Akhilesh to discuss every allegation inside Parliament. The allegations against the Election Commission are baseless. But they don’t want a discussion; they want drama on the streets.”
Shah likened the opposition’s strategy to dissatisfied athletes, remarking that “after losing the match, they are blaming the umpire and alleging vote theft.” He further pointed out that neither Akhilesh Yadav nor Rahul Gandhi had delivered independent state election victories for their respective parties in recent cycles without historical legacy support.
Escalating Tensions Ahead of Opposition Protests
Shah’s remarks come as the INDIA bloc prepares for a series of high-profile agitations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral roll irregularities:
- Postponed Mock Session: The Opposition’s scheduled “public impeachment” mock session against the Chief Election Commissioner—originally slated at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence on Friday—was postponed to Saturday due to heavy unseasonal rains in New Delhi.
- Ramlila Maidan Rally: Opposition parties are gearing up for a major rally at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, November 1, targeting what they characterize as democratic backsliding.
- Nationwide Outreach: In response, the BJP has announced plans for a nationwide public outreach campaign starting November 1 to counter the opposition’s narrative regarding the electoral roll revision.
