In response to the looming threat of Cyclone ‘Arnab’, the Odisha Fire and Emergency Services Department has launched Operation ‘Mukabila’ to ensure full operational readiness and minimise potential loss of life and property.
A high-level review meeting was held at the State Command Room in Bhubaneswar under the chairmanship of Director General of Fire Services, Dr Sudhanshu Sarangi. The meeting was attended by the Chief Fire Officer alongside senior officials of the department to evaluate the administrative, technical, and tactical preparedness across vulnerable regions.
Focus on High-Risk Southern Districts
In-charges from the newly established Command Centres in the Northern, Southern, and Central ranges presented detailed reports on weather forecasts, regional vulnerabilities, and field readiness.
Weather models predict wind speeds reaching up to 80 km/h in districts such as Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. Consequently, special emphasis has been placed on high-risk zones, particularly Malkangiri and Gajapati. To counter prospective damage, the department has resolved to deploy specialised Master Teams backed by critical emergency equipment, including high-capacity de-watering pumps, powerboats, and modern search-and-rescue gear.
Post-Cyclone Restoration and Emergency Readiness
Clear directives have been issued to expedite post-cyclone restoration activities. Specialised tree-cutting and road-clearing teams equipped with power saws will be deployed immediately to clear fallen trees and clear blocked transport corridors, ensuring uninterrupted emergency lines.
Dr Sarangi assured that the Fire Services Department is fully equipped, highly trained, and operating in tight coordination with local district administrations to handle any eventuality and protect the citizens during Cyclone ‘Arnab’.
