Microsoft has launched a large-scale voluntary buyout program that could impact approximately 60,000 employees across key global markets, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and India.
The move comes as the technology giant sharpens its focus on artificial intelligence and prepares for unprecedented investments in AI-driven innovation.
According to reports, the buyout initiative is being offered to eligible employees at Level 70 and below across several divisions. Teams associated with AI Experiences, Copilot, Finance, Human Resources, Xbox, and Windows + Devices have been included in the program.
Employees who choose to participate will be provided with details regarding compensation packages and support measures designed to facilitate voluntary departures. The initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader effort to optimize operational costs while redirecting resources toward strategic growth areas.
Not all business units are covered under the offer. Marketing, Commercial Business, and Security teams have reportedly been excluded from the program, reflecting Microsoft’s targeted approach to workforce management.
The voluntary buyout plan comes as Microsoft intensifies its commitment to artificial intelligence, an area that has become central to the company’s long-term growth strategy. With significant investments planned in AI infrastructure, cloud capabilities, and next-generation software products, the company appears to be balancing workforce costs against ambitious expansion goals.
Industry observers view the development as another sign of how major technology companies are restructuring operations to align with the rapidly evolving AI landscape. As competition in artificial intelligence continues to intensify, organizations are increasingly reassessing resource allocation to support future innovation and profitability.
