Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his “heartiest congratulations” to his “dear friend,” Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on Monday, October 26, 2026, following Lula’s historic re-election victory.
PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening strategic ties and advocating for the shared priorities of the Global South.
Strengthening the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi highlighted the growing multifaceted relationship between the two emerging economies.
”Heartiest congratulations to my dear friend, President Lula, on his remarkable re-election victory,” PM Modi wrote. “I look forward to working closely with him to further deepen and expand the multifaceted India-Brazil Strategic Partnership.”
The Prime Minister emphasized that bilateral cooperation across diverse sectors will remain pivotal in shaping global governance.
”Together, we will continue to strengthen our cooperation across diverse sectors, advance the shared priorities of the Global South and work towards a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable world,” he added.
Lula Secures Historic Fourth Term Amid Post-Election Dispute
PM Modi’s message follows Lula da Silva’s historic presidential runoff victory on October 25, 2026, securing 51.8% of the vote against right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (48.2%). At 80 years old, Lula’s victory marks a historic comeback after trailing in the first round of voting and halts a right-wing wave in Latin America.
Addressing supporters after the results, Lula declared the victory a defeat for “denialism and lies,” asserting that “this country will not accept being anyone’s backyard”.
However, Flávio Bolsonaro has refused to concede, stating he will seek to annul the election results in court following a Supreme Court ruling that extended voting hours by two hours on Sunday. Lula is set to take office for his fourth non-consecutive term on January 5, 2027.
