Tension gripped parts of Hyderabad’s Old City in the early hours of Sunday after an egg was allegedly thrown near a Goddess Durga idol immersion procession, triggering immediate protests and calls for strict action from devotees and local organisations.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:00 AM within the jurisdiction of the Madannapet Police Station. According to police reports, the procession—organised by the Veer Savarkar Nava Yuva Sangham—was passing through a local lane when the egg reportedly fell near the path of the deity.
The unexpected incident quickly sparked outrage among participants and local residents. A large crowd, including members of various Hindu organisations and local youths, gathered at the scene to stage a dharna and perform bhajans, demanding swift identification and punishment for the culprits.
Swift action by local law enforcement helped prevent the situation from escalating further. Senior police officials rushed to the spot, engaged with procession organisers, and successfully restored calm. Authorities have registered a case under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which addresses deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.
Police confirmed that one suspect has been taken into custody. Investigators are currently scouring nearby CCTV footage to piece together the sequence of events and identify any additional accomplices. Heavy security has been deployed across the area as a precautionary measure. Senior officials have urged the public to maintain peace and refrain from circulating unverified rumours on social media.
Meanwhile, the incident has drawn sharp political reactions. BJP spokesperson Veerender Yadav alleged that Hindu religious processions are being deliberately targeted by miscreants. He also criticised the local police handling, accusing them of imposing undue restrictions and resorting to heavy-handed tactics during religious events across the city.
The investigation remains active, and further details are awaited as police continue their probe into the incident.
