The US White House announced on Friday that First Lady Melania Trump has successfully secured a localised ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the front-line city of Oleshky.
The temporary halt in military action is set to take effect on October 29 to facilitate the delivery of critical humanitarian aid and allow the evacuation of civilians through a designated safe passageway.
Brokerage, Terms, and the “Regime of Silence”
Operating in her formal role as an Exclusive Intermediary, Melania Trump worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leaders to establish the terms, timing, objectives, and technical procedures of the arrangement. Commenting on her intervention, the First Lady stated that without her direct involvement, bringing humanitarian aid into the city and evacuating vulnerable residents would have been impossible.
According to Russian army chief Valery Gerasimov, the Russian military will enter a “regime of silence” in the Kherson sector starting at 4:00 am Moscow time on October 27. Additionally, an impartial American media organization has been secured to accompany and document the joint Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground to ensure that the wishes of each family are faithfully respected.
Dire Humanitarian Crisis in Oleshky
Located in southern Ukraine across the Dnipro River from Kherson, Oleshky had a pre-war population of around 24,000. Currently, an estimated 1,700 to 2,000 residents remain—primarily elderly individuals who have been unable to leave, along with approximately 50 children—living amidst mined roads, limited electricity, and regular military attacks.
The plight of Oleshky first came to the First Lady’s attention during a private discussion at her Fostering the Future Together event in New York City during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Utilizing communication channels established through six previous child reunifications involving 34 children, teams from both nations mobilized around the clock to coordinate demining and relief mechanics. Non-military civilian leaders from Russia and Ukraine will now collaborate to assess resident needs and provide coordinated transportation to their preferred destinations, whether in Russia or Ukraine.
