The Delhi High Court on Friday directed the makers of the film Doosra: India’s Other Freedom Struggle to respond to a lawsuit filed by former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly alleging the violation of his personality rights.
A vacation bench led by Justice Vinod Kumar issued summonses to the movie’s director, producers, and distributors. While refusing to grant an immediate stay following the film’s theatrical release on Friday, the court ordered the defendants to arrange a special screening of the movie to evaluate whether Ganguly’s personality rights have been infringed.
The matter has been scheduled for its next hearing on October 29, 2026.
Ganguly, alongside Luv Films LLP—which holds the rights to produce his official biopic—argued that no license was granted to use his persona or image in the film.
In response, senior counsel for the filmmakers asserted that Doosra is not a biopic, but a fictional story about a young girl inspired by iconic Indian sporting moments, including the 2002 NatWest series. Directed by Abhinay Deo, the sports drama stars Plabita Borthakur, Ankur Vikal, and Samidha Guru.
