DC Studios has taken a bold leap into body horror with its latest cinematic venture, Clayface, delivering a dark, revenge-driven thriller that flips the classic comic book narrative on its head.
Directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake), the film focuses on one of Batman’s oldest villains and has emerged as a standout critical success for the studio.
Rising actor Tom Rhys Harries stars as Matt Hagen, a rising Hollywood actor whose life and career are brutally shattered after a violent attack by Gotham crime boss Markos Szabos (David Dencik) leaves him severely disfigured.
Seeking to restore his appearance, Hagen turns to brilliant scientist Dr Caitlyn Corr (Naomi Ackie), whose experimental nanotechnology formula gives him terrifying shape-shifting abilities—along with devastating physical side effects.
Co-written by horror master Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, the screenplay balances Hagen’s emotional descent with visceral, David Cronenberg-esque body horror. The film leans heavily on practical effects and high-octane set pieces, including a tense aeroplane lavatory sequence and a chaotic nightclub showdown.
Supported by a strong cast including Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, Clayface succeeds by blending psychological depth with terrifying practical horror. It proves that exploring Gotham’s darkest corners off the beaten path can yield spectacular results for superhero cinema.
