Ganjam Police conducted simultaneous late-night raids at six locations, including Kulada, and arrested 52 gamblers while seizing cash worth Rs 1.45 lakh and five mobile phones.
Police sources said the raids were carried out on Wednesday night at gambling hubs in Bhanjanagar town, Kulada, Tokaganda, Khamaredi, Hatigada and other nearby areas. The operation was launched as part of an intensified drive against unlawful gambling activities ahead of Kumar Purnima.
While gambling has traditionally been associated with the festive period between Dussehra and Kumar Purnima in parts of Ganjam district, authorities have expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of organised gambling throughout the year. Police officials noted that illegal gambling often contributes to an increase in criminal activities such as theft and robbery.
Bhanjanagar IIC Jibanananda Jena said the police had been maintaining strict surveillance on gambling activities in the region for the past several days. During the coordinated operation, officers apprehended 52 individuals involved in gambling and recovered Rs 1.45 lakh in cash along with five branded mobile phones.
A case has been registered at Bhanjanagar Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
The police have warned that special enforcement drives will continue in the coming days to curb gambling and maintain law and order during the festive season. Officials also appealed to residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and refrain from participating in illegal gambling activities.
