Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik congratulated the student leaders of the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) for their performance in the recent campus union elections, while accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of using administrative pressure, intimidation, and unfair practices to sway results.
Commending the student wing’s strong performance across higher educational institutions, Naveen Patnaik stated:
“I congratulate the young leaders of the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal for having done so well in the recent elections, winning more than 60% of the elections in the colleges, and around 50% of the elections in the universities in spite of the BJP State Govt using money power, muscle power and all unfair practices. I do congratulate all the young people of the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal.”
BJD Hits Out at Administrative Pressure
Patnaik’s statement follows an official press release issued by the BJD, which asserted that the election outcomes reflect a decisive rejection of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and reaffirm youth support for Patnaik’s leadership.
The party alleged that in response to ABVP’s declining ground support, the state administration exerted pressure on college principals and university Vice-Chancellors to target BCJD-aligned candidates.
“The failure of ABVP in several educational institutions indicates that students and Gen-Z are rejecting the BJP,” the release stated. “The pressure allegedly exerted by college principals and university Vice-Chancellors on BCJD-supported candidates at the direction of the government is highly condemnable. Neutrality must be maintained in educational institutions.”
Demand to Stop Campus Politicisation
The opposition party emphasized that after remaining in power for over two and a half years in Odisha, the BJP government must focus on answering the hopes and aspirations of the state’s youth rather than utilizing state machinery to influence campus politics.
Highlighting the political awareness of today’s youth, the BJD noted that students are independent citizens with democratic rights who cannot be treated as tools to fulfill party interests.
“Today’s students and Gen-Z are aware, politically conscious, and capable of distinguishing between genuine leadership and political opportunism,” the party stated, adding that victories in academic spaces cannot be forced through political patronage or administrative overreach.
A Call for Academic Freedom and Fair Play
Challenging the ruling government to uphold democratic norms, the BJD demanded an immediate end to all political interference on college and university campuses.
The party insisted that no student should face academic discrimination or harassment based on their political affiliation, emphasizing that young people in Odisha reserve the right to elect their leadership through fair, democratic processes.
“The BJP government must respect the democratic mandate of students and accept democratic differences of opinion,” the release concluded, reiterating that the political trajectory of Odisha’s youth will be shaped by Gen-Z itself, not through government coercion.
