The capital witnessed a vibrant convergence of global arts today as the BRICS Theatre Festival 2026 officially commenced at the National School of Drama (NSD).
Centred around the powerful theme “Shared Stories, Shared Futures,” the three-day cultural extravaganza brings together leading theatre practitioners, scholars, and troupes from nine BRICS member and partner nations.
Organised by the Ministry of Culture under India’s BRICS Presidency, the festival was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering at the NSD premises, Shri Shekhawat emphasised the unifying power of the arts.
“While diplomacy enables nations to negotiate and economic cooperation helps them prosper, culture enables societies to understand one another. It creates connections that transcend political boundaries,” the Minister noted.
The grand opening ceremony saw the esteemed presence of Ministry of Culture Secretary Shri Vivek Aggarwal, Ministry of External Affairs Secretary and India’s BRICS Sherpa Shri Sudhakar Dalela, NSD Director Shri Chittaranjan Tripathy, along with several Ambassadors and Heads of Mission from participating countries.
A Spectacle of International Performing Arts
The festival features troupes from India, Thailand, Indonesia, Russia, Iran, Vietnam, South Africa, Kazakhstan, and Ethiopia. Ranging from classical storytelling and contemporary drama to experimental stagecraft, the curated lineup showcases the unique creative identities and rich heritage of each participating nation.
The inaugural day set a magnificent tone with the staging of Samudra Manthan at the Abhimanch Auditorium. Written by Asif Ali and brought to life through the design, direction, and music of NSD Director Shri Chittaranjan Tripathy, the production left audiences spellbound.
