Thailand’s King Rama X and Royal Consorts: History & Modern Revival

Thailand’s Queen Suthida made history on Thursday, October 8, completing her first solo flight in a Gripen fighter jet at Surat Thani. Landing after her flight, she was greeted on the tarmac with a bouquet of flowers by her husband, King Maha Vajiralongkorn (King Rama X).

While the flight demonstrated Queen Suthida’s military aviation training, it also reignited international interest in the Thai monarchy’s intricate history surrounding royal household appointments and the modern revival of royal consorts.

Historical Foundations of Siamese Royal Polygyny

For centuries, Siam—the former name of Thailand—maintained a royal court structure where monarchs kept multiple wives and consorts. This practice was deeply tied to dynastic succession, establishing social hierarchies, generating royal heirs, and cementing political alliances with influential provincial families.

Monarchs often maintained extensive households. King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who reigned from 1868 to 1910, famously fathered 77 children with his various wives and titled consorts.

However, as Siam modernized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to align with international diplomatic norms and counter European colonial ambitions, the monarchy gradually moved toward monogamy. By the 1920s, under King Prajadhipok (Rama VII), the Thai crown formally embraced monogamous marriages.

The Modern Revival Under King Rama X

In 2019, King Maha Vajiralongkorn broke nearly a century of royal precedent by formally reviving the practice of appointing an official royal consort.

Just two months after marrying Queen Suthida in May 2019—his fourth marriage—the King conferred the noble title of Chao Khun Phra (Royal Noble Consort) upon Sineenat Wongvajirapakdi. The appointment marked the first official creation of a royal consort in Thailand since 1921.

The appointment generated significant public interest, followed by dramatic palace developments:

  • October 2019: Sineenat was stripped of all royal titles, military ranks, and honors following accusations of disloyalty and attempting to elevate herself to the status of the Queen.
  • August 2020: The palace fully reinstated Sineenat’s titles and military ranks, issuing a royal decree declaring her prior revocation null and void.

Royal Military Ranks and Modern Court Appointments

Beyond the official title of Royal Noble Consort, King Rama X has appointed several prominent members of the royal household guard to elevated military ranks.

In 2024, the King announced the promotion of five women within the Royal Security Command to the rank of Major General. Among them was Oranong Suwannasri, a former palace official who has recently accompanied the King on official merit-making ceremonies at Wat Boromniwas and Wat Benchamabophit in Bangkok.

As Thailand balances centuries-old monarchical heritage with modern constitutional governance, the inner workings and military roles within the royal court continue to draw global fascination.
