As the India Bloc’s 12-hour statewide bandh takes effect, the Commissionerate Police have stepped up security measures across the capital city, issuing a stern warning to agitators against any acts of coercion or disruption of public life.
Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Saravana Vivek M explicitly stated that while peaceful and lawful demonstrations are permitted, any attempt to forcefully shut down shops, block roads, or obstruct normal daily life will attract immediate criminal cases.
“Protests must remain peaceful and within the boundaries of the law. If anyone tries to enforce the bandh through sheer force, police will take strict legal action. Our primary focus is to ensure that public convenience and essential services remain uninterrupted,” the DCP emphasized.
Massive Security Deployment
To maintain law and order, 18 platoons of police force have been heavily deployed throughout Bhubaneswar. Key checkpoints, major intersections, government offices, railway stations, bus terminals, educational institutions, and busy marketplaces are under constant surveillance. Senior officials are personally monitoring patrolling and crowd management, supported by PCR vans, Quick Response Teams (QRTs), and reserve forces.
State authorities have similarly alerted all District Collectors and District Magistrates to safeguard public peace, prevent untoward incidents, and ensure the unhindered functioning of essential services and government offices.
Core Demands of the Bandh
The day-long agitation called by the India Bloc highlights several key grievances, including:
-
Withdrawal of the MMDR Act amendments
-
Resignation of the Mass Education Minister
-
Ouster of the Chief Election Commissioner
Protesters have engaged in picketing, rail roko, and road blockades in various locations. However, specialised administrative provisions have been made to protect national highways, railway networks, and critical emergency services from major disruptions.
Authorities have advised citizens to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and rely on updates from the police control room, which is monitoring the unfolding situation around the clock.
