The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a major simplification in the voter registration process by doing away with the requirement for an additional declaration in Form 6.
Following the conclusion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)-2026, eligible citizens whose names are currently missing from the electoral rolls retain the opportunity to enrol through the standard Form 6 application process.
Under the updated guidelines, applicants whose names were omitted from the voter list during the SIR-2026 process are no longer required to provide details regarding the 2002 voter list when re-applying. Furthermore, citizens will no longer need to furnish information on whether the names of their parents or grandparents were included in the 2002 electoral roll.
By scrapping this additional declaration requirement, the ECI aims to eliminate unnecessary procedural hurdles, enabling eligible individuals to submit Form 6 through standard channels without needing legacy electoral data.
Verification Standards Remain Strict
The Commission clarified that submitting Form 6 does not lead to automatic inclusion in the voter list. The mandatory verification process concerning an applicant’s eligibility and submitted supporting documents will continue unchanged.
Electoral authorities will thoroughly inspect every application and verify the accompanying documents before making a final decision in accordance with statutory rules. No individual’s name will be added to the voter list without successfully undergoing complete verification.
Focus on Accuracy and Inclusivity
The general mechanism to register as a voter via Form 6 remains active and accessible. Unregistered citizens who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to follow the prescribed process and submit their applications.
The ECI emphasized that the primary objective behind these measures is to maintain an accurate, pure, and transparent electoral roll while ensuring every eligible citizen is provided a fair opportunity to register and exercise their constitutional right to vote.
