More than 9,000 candidates appeared for just 187 Home Guard posts in Sambalpur district, reflecting the growing unemployment crisis in Odisha.
The minimum qualification required was Class V, yet applicants included ITI graduates, engineers, MBAs, and MCAs.
Officials reported that over 11,000 youths applied for the posts, but nearly 1,200 were rejected for failing to meet eligibility criteria. The exam took place at Jamadarapali Airstrip, chosen to manage the large crowd. Candidates arrived as early as 6 a.m., and the test began at 10:30 a.m. under strict supervision.
The exam consisted of two essay questions worth 10 marks each and a general knowledge paper worth 30 marks. Candidates received 90 minutes to complete the test. Daily wages for Home Guards stand at Rs 612, amounting to ₹18,360 per month. Despite modest pay, the overwhelming response highlighted desperation among educated youth seeking employment.
Police deployed drones and over 200 officers to monitor the exam. Sambalpur SP Mukesh Bhamu supervised the arrangements with three additional SPs, 24 inspectors, and more than 100 traffic police and Home Guards, ensuring order.
