Vedanta Aluminium has installed 96 solar-powered streetlights across 21 villages in the Kalahandi and Rayagada districts of Odisha. These streetlights serve as the primary source of illumination in previously unlit areas, benefiting over 5,000 residents and reducing approximately 22 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually.

This initiative is part of a larger plan to install a total of 150 solar-powered streetlights in key locations, including marketplaces, village entrances, bus stands, community centers, schools, and main roads. By enhancing nighttime visibility, this project aims to create safer and more accessible public spaces after dark, ultimately improving the overall quality of life for local communities.

In addition to supporting Vedanta Aluminium’s broader mission to develop rural infrastructure and uplift communities in its operational areas, this project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, it addresses SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, stated, “At Vedanta Aluminium, our community development programs are tailored to meet the specific needs of the regions we serve. The solar lighting project in Kalahandi and Rayagada is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and inclusive growth. It is heartening to witness the positive impact these installations are already making in enhancing safety, improving mobility, and strengthening community well-being. By integrating green infrastructure into rural areas, we strive to build a brighter, safer, and more sustainable future.”

Jagannath Naik Nayab, Sarpanch of Sunger Gram Panchayat in the Kashipur Block, remarked, “Vedanta’s solar-lighting initiative has not only brightened our villages but also made them safer for everyone. We now have access to a reliable power supply. Everyone in the village truly appreciates the company’s efforts in addressing our community’s needs.”

Vedanta Aluminium remains committed to driving transformation in Odisha through strategic initiatives focused on education, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods, rural infrastructure, and grassroots sports and culture. By closely collaborating with local authorities and community stakeholders, the company ensures that its interventions lead to tangible socio-economic progress.
