20 wagons of a limestone-laden freight train derailed near the Dayal Market area of Biramitrapur in Sundargarh district on Saturday.
The train, operated for cargo transport from BSLC’s limestone mines to Durgapur by Vishrastone Mining Company Limited, was loading 59 wagons at the time.
The derailment occurred during the loading phase, causing significant inconvenience for locals commuting through the area. Eyewitnesses reported that the misaligned wagons obstructed key passages, leading to chaos in the marketplace.
Upon receiving reports, officials from BSLC, the Railway Department, and local police swiftly arrived at the scene. Initial investigations were launched to determine the cause of the derailment, while engineers were seen working toward restoring the derailed wagons.
As rescue and recovery operations progressed, residents expressed concern over railway safety near mining zones. Authorities assured that a detailed review will be conducted to prevent recurrence.
No casualties were reported, but the incident raised questions about logistical coordination and infrastructure readiness in mineral transport corridors.
