Nabarangpur: Two journalists of separate web channels were arrested on charges of extorting money from a school headmaster in Nabarangpur district, while one more journalist is still absconding.
The accused persons have been identified as Jitendra Das, Shankar Prasad Turuk and Nigam Sahu.
As per information, the incident was seeded by the 10-year-old son of Kamal Banjharaj of Naikguda in Umerkote block of the district who was asked to leave the school premise for not being a student of the same educational institution. While initially, the child resorted to misbehaviour and hurled abuses, on September 4, the three journalists visited the school and called for the Headmaster to talk about the incident.
However, they demanded to see the paperwork of the school and threatened to publish a news item against him and the school. They demanded him to pay Rs 50,000 for not publishing the news item.
Frightened, the Headmaster first transferred Rs 30,000 to Jitendra through UPI, while Nigam received Rs 5,000 in cash from him. They threatened him to pay the rest amount and also hurled abuses at him.
With no other options left, the Headmaster lodged a complaint against the three and Kamal at Umerkote Police Station. Based on it, police arrested Jitendra and Shankar while Nigam is absconding.
