A major explosion inside a coal mine in Tashkhai, Meghalaya, claimed the lives of at least 10 labourers on Thursday.
The blast triggered panic in the area and led to heavy casualties among workers present at the site.
According to initial reports, most of the victims are suspected to be migrant labourers from Assam. Meghalaya Police immediately launched a rescue operation, deploying teams to the site to search for survivors and recover bodies.
Preliminary information confirmed that one of the deceased hailed from Bihara village in Katigara. Authorities are working to identify the remaining victims and notify their families.
Meanwhile, officials have begun investigating the cause of the blast. Safety lapses and illegal mining practices are being examined as possible factors. The incident has once again raised concerns about hazardous working conditions in Meghalaya’s coal mines.
