The Indian Army has embarked on a significant mission, with a contingent from the Madras Regiment departing for Fort Wainwright, Alaska, to participate in the 21st edition of the India-USA Joint Military Exercise, Yudh Abhyas 2025.
Scheduled from September 1 to 14, 2025, this annual exercise underscores the deepening defence cooperation between the two nations, fostering interoperability and readiness for complex global challenges.
The Indian contingent will train alongside the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment “Bobcats” of the Arctic Wolves Brigade Combat Team, part of the USA’s 11th Airborne Division. Over the two-week exercise, troops from both sides will engage in a range of tactical drills, including heliborne operations, surveillance using unmanned aerial systems, rock craft, mountain warfare, casualty evacuation, and combat medical aid. The training will also integrate advanced systems such as artillery, aviation, and electronic warfare, preparing both forces for multi-domain operations.
A key highlight of Yudh Abhyas 2025 is the collaboration between subject-matter experts from both armies. Working groups will focus on critical areas such as unmanned aerial systems (UAS), counter-UAS operations, information warfare, communications, and logistics. These discussions aim to enhance technical expertise and share best practices, further strengthening bilateral military ties.
The exercise will culminate in a series of jointly planned tactical manoeuvres, including live-fire exercises and high-altitude warfare scenarios. A particular emphasis will be placed on improving capabilities for United Nations peacekeeping operations, reflecting both nations’ commitment to global stability. The Arctic environment of Fort Wainwright adds a unique dimension, testing the troops’ resilience and adaptability in extreme conditions.
