A sombre mood enveloped the pilgrim town of Puri on Wednesday as news broke of a young man’s death by drowning in Narendra Pond amid the ongoing Chandan Yatra festival. The fire department, after a meticulous search operation, recovered the youth’s body.
The tragedy unfolded in the late afternoon hours, according to eyewitnesses, when the young man, whose identity has not yet been disclosed by authorities, was participating in the festival’s activities. Narendra Pond, known for its spiritual significance, becomes a focal point during Chandan Yatra, where devotees gather to witness the ceremonial bathing of Lord Jagannath’s deity representatives. However, the large crowds and lack of adequate safety measures have often turned such events into scenes of tragedy.
Local police and fire department officials were quick to respond, launching a search operation that lasted hours. The cause of the drowning remains under investigation, with preliminary reports suggesting that the victim may have slipped into deeper waters amidst the crowded conditions.
This incident is not an isolated one for Narendra Pond. Just last year, during the same Chandan Yatra festival, a firecracker explosion near the pond claimed 17 lives and injured over 30 people. The 2024 explosion had already prompted calls for stricter safety protocols, but Wednesday’s drowning suggests that little has changed.
Narendra Pushkarini’s location near the Jagannath Temple makes it a magnet for devotees, but its deep waters and lack of barriers pose significant risks, especially during festivals.
