In a serious breach of security at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, a youth was caught attempting to record visuals inside the temple using a spy camera concealed in his spectacles.
The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns over the misuse of advanced surveillance gadgets in sacred and high-security religious spaces.
The youth, identified as a resident of the Abhisit Kar area in Gajapati Nagar, Puri, entered the Srimandir with a tiny hidden camera fitted into his eyewear. According to sources, the camera was capable of transmitting real-time video and images directly to his mobile phone.
Alert security personnel posted near the Beherana Dwara grew suspicious of his movements and apprehended him. Upon inspection, they discovered the covert device integrated into his spectacles. The temple’s armed security team immediately detained the youth and handed him over to Singhadwara police station for interrogation.
Authorities are currently investigating whether he was able to capture or share any visuals from within the temple, where photography and videography are strictly prohibited. The motive behind the act is still unclear, and police are probing whether the accused was acting alone or as part of a larger network.
The incident has raised serious alarms about the vulnerability of protected religious heritage sites to modern surveillance tools and the urgent need for enhanced screening mechanisms at entry points.
