Yashasvi Jaiswal, one of India’s rising cricket stars, is working hard to secure a regular spot in the ODI team. He faces stiff competition from senior opener Rohit Sharma for the second opening position.
Limited ODI Exposure
Jaiswal made his ODI debut in February 2023 against England but has played only one match in the format. Meanwhile, the Indian ODI team has played many matches, meaning he has missed opportunities to cement his place.
Ahead of the second ODI against Australia in Perth, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak highlighted Jaiswal’s efforts to improve his secondary skills, including leg-spin bowling, to boost his selection chances.
“He is aware that his turn will come. So he is preparing well. At the end of the day, only 11 can play, and he knows that he has to keep pushing,” Kotak said.
Red-Ball to White-Ball Transition
Jaiswal is well-known for his red-ball achievements, including multiple centuries and double-hundreds. However, transitioning to the 50-over format requires adjusting his strike rate, shot selection, and pacing to powerplays and middle overs.
Selectors want him to demonstrate consistent ODI performance while maintaining his attacking style.
Adding Bowling Skills
Jaiswal is actively working on leg-spin in the nets. Although he has yet to take wickets internationally, his efforts to become an all-round contributor strengthen his chances for regular ODI selection.
“He wants to bowl more and more. He looks more consistent now. That’s a positive sign,” Kotak added.
Outlook
With a strong Test track record and solid T20 performances, Jaiswal is gradually proving himself in the ODI setup. Fans and selectors are watching closely as he prepares for upcoming matches.
