In a chilling incident that has sent shockwaves through the rural community of Bolangir district, police recovered the decomposed body of a woman from a cotton field near Gaelpita under the Bandhapada outpost of Deogaon police station limits on Wednesday morning.
Police have registered an unnatural death case, with investigations underway, as confirmed by Outpost In-Charge Malaya Panda. The grim discovery was made by locals who were grazing goats in the area. Spotting the decomposed body, they rushed back to the village to alert residents. The landowner promptly informed the police.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers cordoned off the area and initiated preliminary inquiries. A scientific investigation team was soon dispatched to the site, where they conducted a thorough examination of the surroundings for evidence.
Sources indicate that the body showed signs of strangulation, with the face appearing severely disfigured—possibly burned with chemicals in an attempt to destroy forensic traces.
While official details remain limited, local speculation is rife that the victim may have been subjected to rape before being murdered, with the perpetrators attempting to conceal evidence by mutilating the body.
Further updates are awaited as the postmortem report and forensic analysis progress.
