India’s batting star Virat Kohli shared a motivational social media post on Thursday, hours after the Indian cricket team arrived in Perth for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. The post appeared to put retirement rumours to rest.
Kohli has been included in the 50-over squad for the series, which begins October 19 at Optus Stadium. India will play three ODIs before moving on to a five-match T20I series.
Kohli’s Social Media Message
On X (formerly Twitter), Kohli emphasized resilience and persistence, stating:
“The only time you truly fail is when you decide to give up.”
The post implies that he is not ready to retire and continues to focus on contributing to the team. This is Kohli’s first personal tweet since wishing Prime Minister Narendra Modi a happy birthday on September 17.
Context: Retirement Speculation
The 36-year-old had retired from T20Is in June last year after India’s T20 World Cup victory. Recently, he also stepped away from Test cricket, sparking speculation about his future in international cricket.
Following the Test series, there was uncertainty about Kohli’s and Rohit Sharma’s roles in the ODI format. While both were selected for the Australia series, the team management remains cautious about making long-term commitments, given their age and limited game time in the 50-over format.
BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla has since clarified that the Australia series will not mark the end of their international careers. Kohli and Sharma are expected to participate in the home series against South Africa starting November 30 and New Zealand in January 2026, along with select Vijay Hazare Trophy matches beginning December 24.
Team Arrivals and Preparations
The Indian team arrived in Perth in two batches. The first batch, including Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Shreyas Iyer, departed from New Delhi on Wednesday morning. The evening batch included key support staff and players such as Dilip, Morne Morkel, Sitanshu Kotak, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Mohammed Siraj.
The team is expected to rest on Thursday after the long journey and resume training on Friday in preparation for the first ODI.
Why the Series Matters
The Australia tour is significant for Kohli as it allows him to demonstrate his form in the 50-over format after recent retirements and addresses questions about his continuing international career.
